October 12, 1492, Christopher Colombus and his companions
land
on a small island of the archipelago of Bahamas, the
island of Guanahani which they name San El Salvador.
At the beginning of November the fleet lies in front
of Cuba. Christopher Colombus sends to ground two
of
his sailors, Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torrès.
They will be the first Europeans to discover the island.
It is during the first expedition of Christopher Colombus
that tobacco will be discovered. During the following
expeditions, many plants, completely unknown to Europeans
were discovered, such as corn, bean, potato, pumpkin,
cotton, vanilla, pineapple, hevea, strawberry, pepper,
avocado, Jerusalem artichoke, etc... In addition,
innumerable
decorative plants were also discovered like begonia,
dahlia, petunia, nasturtium, philodendron...
