ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES (CAMBRIDGE) LTD (BAT) AND INSTITUT DU TABAC DE BERGERAC (ALTADIS) AGREE TO WORK TOGETHER ON TOBACCO GENOME RESEARCH
Advanced Technologies (Cambridge) Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of British American Tobacco) and Institut du Tabac de Bergerac (part of the Altadis Group) have signed an agreement concerning sequencing of tobacco genes.
In the next few years, tobacco genome research is expected to improve our understanding of the interactions between genes involved in the formation of undesirable compounds in cigarette smoke.
This joint ATC-ITB approach is expected to help develop new tools to be used in programs already underway to investigate the causes of risks associated with tobacco and in the longer term ways of potentially reducing these risks.
To encourage a wide range of further initiatives on tobacco plant genetics and in other crops, the resulting gene sequences from the collaboration will be made freely available to the worldwide scientific community through public access databases.
This initiative is being announced at the sixth Tobacco Scientific Meetings being held today and tomorrow in Bergerac. The Scientific Meetings instigated by Institut du Tabac de Bergerac in 1995, are held every other year, bringing together tobacco industry researchers, growers, leaf merchants and government research institutions. The Meetings have already resulted in the launch of a large number of projects and collaborative research programs on tobacco.
